REMINDER
Next Club Dinner Meeting
Thursday July 21, 2011
Clubhouse-Phoenix Farms Road
 @ 6pm

Since 1946, the primary focus of the Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen's Club has been deer feeding, fish stocking and conservancy advocacy.  The Club has been a tireless advocate for fishing and watershed conservation, outdoor education, improved hunting and fishing opportunities and protecting public access rights in the Keweenaw.

When local and state decision makers are faced with important decisions on wildlife management and sportsmen's issues, they need to be aware of the economic and political clout of Keweenaw hunters and anglers.   Grass roots action can be the deciding factor on political issues protecting sportsmen's interests.  Through letter writing campaigns and attendance at public meetings, we urge local and state legislators, the Michigan DNR and the Michigan Natural Resources Commission to make environmentally responsible and user friendly decisions that benefit the Keweenaw and our hunting and fishing resources.  We also oppose anti hunting and fishing legislation.  Through membership in Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC), U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, U.P. Sportsmen's Alliance, U.P. Whitetails and Michigan United Deer Hunters the club extends its strength as an influential grass roots organization.

Supplemental deer feeding is still the major club project with club members providing the manpower to obtain and disperse the feed in established deer yards throughout the Keweenaw.  Without this supplemental feeding, the severe Keweenaw winters would not sustain adequate deer populations for hunting (a huntable herd) and recreational viewing.
Club House

Through a generous donation in 2003 by Keweenaw natives and long time club members Ernie and Edith Niederer, the club now owns a wooded 13 acre parcel on the Phoenix Farms Road in Keweenaw County.  In 2006 the club purchased a house from Keweenaw County at the former Radar Base on Mount Horace Greeley.  The house was moved to the property at 5947 Phoenix Farms Road in 2007.  Renovations began and continued through 2008 resulting in this fully operational clubhouse.  In 2011 work will begin on an Archery range along with internal upgrades to the clubhouse.  Future plans call for nature trails, picnic areas, a barbecue pit and eventually shooting facilities.  The club also envisions planting trees and food plots to support wildlife.  Profits from major fundraisers such as the club’s annual gun/sports show and raffle go to our Keweenaw Legacy Building Fund for the development of the property.

The Club and its members have been and continue to be active in supporting the community.  Members have volunteered their time in stream and pond cleanups, roadside and beach cleanups, as guides for local Historical events, bell ringers for the Salvation Army, advisors for Michigan DNR land acquisition projects, sponsoring a youth fishing derby at Swedetown pond and writing support letters for Keweenaw County public land acquisitions. The club also made recent contributions to the Lake Linden School Forest for development of an Archery range and to the Calumet High School “Archery in the Schools Program”.  The club also supports a local Youth Hunter Safety Training program.  Successful youth hunters are recognized at the December membership meeting.
The club is working with the Calumet Township Supervisor and the DEQ on a summer 2009 project to improve fishing access to the Swedetown pond.

At the Annual meeting, held in conjunction with the regular January 20, 2011 club meeting, the following were approved as the officers for 2011.

Club dinner meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month (winter months) at the Copper City hall located next to the Post Office in Copper City.  Copper City will be the club dinner meeting site for January, February, March, and April 2011. Our first dinner meeting was held at the clubhouse in October 2008 and we plan to continue summer meetings there in 2011.  Dinner prepared by our outstanding chefs is served promptly at 6PM.  After dinner the club features guest speakers addressing fishing, hunting, deer feeding, conservation issues and additional topics of interest to Keweenaw Sportsmen and Sportswomen.
